A Modern Guide to the Traditional Chinese Wedding

In China, a wedding is far more than a ceremony—it’s a cultural performance rich with symbolism and ancestral respect. While many modern couples also opt for a Western-style white wedding, the traditional Chinese wedding remains the emotional core of the celebration.

A typical traditional wedding begins with the Guo Da Li (betrothal gift exchange), where the groom’s family formally presents gifts to the bride’s family as a sign of sincerity and commitment. On the big day, the groom performs the “door games” (naohun) at the bride’s home, playfully proving his love and patience before he can “collect” his bride. The tea ceremony follows, during which the couple serves tea to both sets of parents and elders, symbolizing gratitude and the official union of two families.

Red dominates the entire event—from invitations and décor to the wedding candies and even the envelopes used for monetary gifts. Unlike Western weddings that emphasize individual romance, a Chinese wedding places equal weight on family honor, continuity, and social harmony.

Today, many couples choose to blend traditions with modern touches: holding a tea ceremony in the morning and a Western reception at night, or incorporating traditional elements into an otherwise contemporary celebration. No matter how it evolves, a Chinese wedding remains a powerful reminder that marriage is not just about two people—it’s about two families coming together.
